The Oswego State men's basketball team cruised to a 77-61 victory over visiting Fredonia on Friday night in Max Ziel Gymnasium. With the win, the Lakers are now 13-6 overall and 6-6 in SUNYAC competition. The Blue Devils fall to 6-13 on the year and 5-8 in conference.
Oswego and Fredonia played nip-and-tuck basketball over the first eight minutes before the Lakers grabbed control. Senior Kyle Covley drained a trey at 12:11 of the first half, initiating a 28-10 span for Oswego to close-out the period. During that run, the Lakers were shooting well, making 8-for-17 from the floor, including 5-for-8 from distance, and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. Covley (9) and Brian Sortino (11) combined for 20 of the 28 Oswego points in that stretch.
Due to that final 12:11 of the half, the Lakers headed to the break with a comfortable 43-24 on the Blue Devils. Oswego continued that momentum into the second stanza as it managed to lead by double-digits for the entire 20 minutes, extending the advantage to as many as 19 on several occasions.
For the seventh-straight game, Sortino registered more than 20 points, tallying 21 against Fredonia. Covley was not far behind, racking up an even 20 points in the tilt. The guard shot 7-for-11 (63.6%) from the field, including a sharpshooting 6-for-8 (75.0%) from deep.
Also wrapping the outing in double-digits was Keith Tyson, notching 16 for the home team. The junior recorded a team-high four assists to go along with five rebounds and a steal. Tyson only trailed classmate Mykelle Krecko on the glass, as Krecko corralled 11 boards. The center also turned in two blocks and three points.
Alex Rawa filled the stat sheet for Oswego, totaling eight points, four rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal.
As a team, Oswego had a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, dishing out 14 assists while turning the ball over just seven times. That should come as no surprise as the Lakers rank fourth in the country in fewest turnovers and sixth in turnovers per game.
Oswego will look for another conference win at 4 p.m. on Saturday when Buffalo State comes to campus.
