Noss and Smith Shine in Laker Shutout at Utica

OS Hockey

The Oswego State women's ice hockey team, ranked ninth nationally, extended its win streak to three with a 1-0 victory over host Utica College on Tuesday night in the Memorial Auditorium. With the win, the Lakers improve to 14-4-1 on the year and 10-3-1 in league play while the Pioneers fall to 6-8-4, 4-5-3.

After a scoreless first period, Oswego entered the second on a mission, beginning play with 55 seconds left on a power play. Utica was nabbed for a trip late in the opening stanza, and Andrea Noss made the Pioneers pay, tallying a score just 21 seconds in to the middle period. Noss was assisted by reigning ECAC West Player of the Week Alli Ullrich and sophomore Kendall Appelbaum. It was Ullrich's seventh point in just three games over the past five days.

Bridget Smith earned her fifth shutout of the between the pipes, tying her for second in the country for that category. The senior made 27 saves without allowing a goal, increasing her save percentage to .959, which ties her for first in Division III.

The Lakers penalty kill was stingy once again after holding Buffalo State 0-for-7 in two games over the weekend. On Tuesday night, Oswego was penalized four times but refused to surrender a goal on any of those chances.

Both teams attempted 27 shots while the Lakers won five more faceoffs (31-26).

Oswego will now gear up for its first ever series with ECAC West newcomer William Smith College, playing in Geneva, N.Y. at 4 p.m. on Saturday before hosting the Herons at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
