After losing 4-2, the Oswego State softball team (15-15, 8-8 SUNYAC) rebounded with a 10-3 win against Geneseo to stay in the thick of the SUNYAC playoff race Friday afternoon, April 26.
The Lakers sit in sixth place for the final tournament spot with a two-game lead over Buffalo State with two games remaining for both programs. Oswego State travels to Brockport, while the Bengals, who own the tiebreaker versus the Lakers, travel to Potsdam.
The Blue Knights raced out of the blocks with three runs in the first inning, as the home team pounded out five hits. The Lakers got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when a double into left field from Dee Apps (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.) drove in Tori Trovato (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) from first base.
Geneseo added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Oswego State started the seventh with a Trovato double, and she later scored on a Blue Knight fielding error to pull the Lakers to within two runs. However, Oswego State did not keep the momentum moving in the loss.
Laker hurler Sarah Thayer (Sr., Winthrop, N.Y.) suffered the complete-game loss after giving up four runs on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Katie Gallagher allowed one run over five innings to earn the win.
Oswego State posted five runs on three hits before the Blue Knights notched a run in the first and the second to make the score, 5-2, in favor of the visitors.
The Lakers distanced themselves from Geneseo in the fourth when Trovato delivered a two-run single after the first three Oswego State batters reached safely. Before the frame was over, the Lakers plated two more runs to go ahead, 9-2.
Each team scored one more time, as Oswego State recorded the victory.
Alexis Nasca (Fr., Hamburg, N.Y.) tallied her sixth win of the season by allowing just two runs over the first four innings, while Alexandria Connelly (Fr., Endicott, N.Y.) give up one run in the final three frames. Geneseo's Nicole Zimmerman was chased from the game after two-thirds of an inning following two hits, three walks and five runs.
