Power-Play Goals Lift Lakers to Victory

Power-Play Goals Lift Lakers to Victory

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team was sharp all-around as it defeated the Nazareth Golden Flyers, 5-1, at home on Saturday night. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 11-3-1 on the season, while Nazareth falls to 8-6-2.

It was an explosive first period for the Lakers. A little less than seven minutes into the game, Oswego took advantage of its first power-play. Max Novick sent a hard pass to Mitch Emerson, who stuffed it into the Golden Flyer goal. Aaron Huffnagle collected an assist on the play as well.

Just over 30 seconds later, the Lakers added on another goal. This time, David Ferreira sent a pass across the ice to Trent Durocher, who took a shot from the left side to extend the Laker lead. Ferreira notched his third assist of the season, while freshman Jesse Farabee earned his first career assist on the goal.

The Lakers were relentless, tacking on a third goal less than two minutes later. Cameron Berry batted a midair pass from Joseph Molinaro into Nazareth's goal to put Oswego up, 3-0.

Oswego found power-play success again with a little more than eight minutes to go in the first period. Josh Zizekcollected the puck in the midst of chaos in front of the Nazareth net, and slapped it in to give the Lakers a four-goal advantage. The sophomore entered the game tied for 21st in the nation with four power-play goals. Michael Gillespie and Mitch Herlihey assisted on Zizek's goal for their sixth and seventh assists of the season, respectively.

Although the Golden Flyers managed to score near the end of the first period, the Lakers carried their momentum into the second period. Less than two minutes into it, freshman Thomas Horn smacked the puck up into the Golden Flyer goal for his first career goal. Molinaro earned his second assist of the night on the goal, while Cameron Berryearned one as well.

David Richer played all 60 minutes in the net for the Lakers, making 16 saves and taking home the win. While Oswego was able to make the most of its power-plays, Richer and the Laker defense did not allow Nazareth to do the same. The Lakers killed all four of their penalties.

Oswego remains at home when it hosts SUNYAC foe Cortland at 7 p.m. on Friday for Youth Night.
