Oswego State baseball standout Dan Saccocio has been recognized by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as a Capital One First Team Academic All-American. This comes on the heels of Saccocio earning Academic All-District 3 honors from CoSIDA and Capital One in May.
One of just three outfielders on the first team, Saccocio garnered the spot for his efforts in the classroom paired with his accolades on the diamond. As a student, the senior maintained a 3.95 grade-point average in business administration while holding down left field and the lead-off spot in the Laker batting order.
On a team that tied a program record for wins in a season and made it back to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1996, Saccocio was an integral piece to the puzzle. The Scotia, N.Y. native finished the season ranked in the top 30 of seven different national statistical categories.
Saccocio led the country in getting hit by pitches (29.0) and second in hit by pitches per game (0.73). This contributed to an on-base percentage of .538, which was good for 13th highest in Division III.
Once Saccocio reached first base, he wreaked havoc on opponents' defenses, stealing 25 bases to rank 25th in that category. He averaged 0.63 swiped bags per game, which was good for 30th in the country.
Taking the extra base usually led to Oswego runs, as Saccocio scored 1.3 runs per game (11th) and crossed home plate 52 times for the Lakers (22nd), which was 21 more runs scored than his next closest teammate and five more than the second-ranked player in the SUNYAC.
