The Oswego State men`s track and field team competed at the Cortland Classic on Friday and Saturday. For the second week in a row, the men's sprint and throws group put on an impressive display.
On Friday afternoon, junior Matt McDorman came within four centimeters of the school javelin record. What was more impressive than how close to the record he came, or where he finished (third overall and highest non-Divison III finisher), was the fact that his throw was a lifetime best by over 18 feet. His throw of 49.93 sits currently in second among the SUNYAC standings. Senior Brian Wisely also threw a lifetime best to finish 8th with a lifetime best throw of 44.89. His throw moved him up to sixth on the SUNYAC list.
After battling with an injury before the start of the outdoor season, junior captain Matt Wagenhauser opened up with an impressive performance in the 400, running away from the field to take first in the event with an ECAC qualifying time of 48.53. He would later wrap up the day with an 1:53 split in the 4x800 to help that team take second overall to close out the meet.
In the 110 hurdles, Arek Janiga ran a career-best of 16.29 in the trials on Friday night. On Saturday, running into a headwind, Janiga clawed his way to a fifth place finish in the event to round-out a strong weekend.
In the short sprints, junior Brandon Comden started off his meet taking 12th in the 100, with a lifetime best 11.26. While that time was not enough to qualify him for Saturday's finals, Comden closed out the weekend with an electrifying performance in the 200. His time of 22.78 with a strong headwind was good enough to clinch his heat and move him up to second place overall in the field.
The men's team returns to action on Friday night in Philadelphia, with the 4x400-meter relay running at the Penn Relays. The team will link up again on Saturday morning in Rochester, when they run through its final rehearsals for the SUNYAC Championships on May 2 and 3.
