Two Comeback Efforts Not Enough in Losses to Brockport

OS Softball The Oswego State softball team had two comebacks fall just short, taking two losses to Brockport in SUNYAC action on Friday night in a neutral site series at Hopkins Road Park. With the loss, Oswego falls to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play while the Golden Eagles improve to 11-4, 2-0.

GAME ONE – Brockport 9, Oswego 7:

Brockport opened with runs in each of the first four innings to build an 8-3 advantage on the Lakers. Oswego battled back, however, forming a four-run fifth inning to cut its deficit to just one.

The inning began with an Alexis Nasca homer to right field followed by a double to left from Ashley Lyman. After Sammie Schroeter reached by virtue of an error, Jacquie Porreca imitated Lyman with a double of her own to left, scoring K Dobkowski who had pinch-ran for Lyman. Katie Bredin then singled on a bunt to the shortstop which scored Porreca and Schroeter to cut the lead to 8-7.

In the final two innings, Oswego was unable to string together a run as Brockport tacked on an insurance score in the top of the seventh.

Porreca, Nasca and Jessie Terrano each finished with two hits with Nasca leading the way with two RBI. Nasca started and took the loss on the mound, lasting three innings surrendering six runs, five of which were earned. Alexandria Connelly threw the final four innings, letting up just one earned run on four hits.

GAME TWO- Brockport 10, Oswego 7:

In game two, the Lakers showed even more grit, climbing back from an even larger deficit to actually tie the game in the sixth inning. Oswego entered the sixth frame trailing by six runs at 7-1 but gained it all back to knot the score.

Justine Abramowski took a one-out walk to kick it off and Bredin doubled into center. Terrano then grounded out on what would have scored Abramowski regardless, but a throwing error allowed the junior to take first as well. Lyman then singled up the middle to score Bredin and Nasca reached on a fielder's choice as the defense tried to throw out Terrano at the plate but the attempt was late.

A Dobkowski ground out scored Laura Kahn who had took over on the bases for Lyman, before a Deanna Apps single to left field plated Nasca to knot the game at 7-7.

Brockport had an answer again in the seventh to spoil the comeback story, as the Golden Eagles led off with a solo home run. They nearly made it back-to-back jacks but Schroeter made a stellar reaching grab over the center field fence to prevent the run and obtain the out. It didn't stop the Golden Eagles from adding two more runs to make it 10-7 heading into the bottom of the final inning.

Oswego tried to once again mount a come-from-behind run and had bases loaded with the Laker representing the game-winning run at-bat, but sharp hit liner by Porreca headed for the right center gap was robbed by the second baseman.

Lyman finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Bredin collected two hits with two runs scored.

On the mound, Connelly took the loss in a relief effort, throwing the seventh inning. Katie Heselden took the start and went six innings, scattering six hits while letting up seven runs, six of which were earned.

Oswego will be back in action at 12 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Geneseo at Ray Middle School in Baldwinsville, N.Y.
