The Oswego State women's cross country team began the new season with a third-place showing out of 11 squads at the SUNY Poly Short Course Invitational on Saturday morning. Utica College won the meet with 33 points followed by Oneonta's 42 and then the Lakers' 66.
Three Lakers claimed top-10 finishes, beginning with a pair of freshmen. Kayla Wheeler clocked a 17:49 for seventh place with classmate Sarah Rappleye just a second back for eighth. Joining the first-year duo in the top 10 was senior Morgan Bronner. Bronner crossed the finish line in 17:56, good for 10th place.
Other scorers for Oswego were sophomore Jamie Kasza (18:22) and junior Shauna Fliss (18:30).
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday as they journey to Clinton, N.Y. for the Hamilton College Invitational.
