The Oswego State women's lacrosse team (4-4, 1-1 SUNYAC) trailed by three goals with 11 minutes remaining in the second half, but rallied late to defeat 19th-ranked Geneseo (5-3, 0-2), 13-12 in overtime, Thursday afternoon, April 4, at South Athletic Field.
Oswego State's Erannan Shattuck (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) got things rolling for the Lakers, scoring her 16th goal of the season following a Mackenzie Kjerstad (Jr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) assist. Minutes later, Kaila Curatalo (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) took a pass from Shattuck and found the back of the net to put Oswego State up, 2-0, just four minutes into the game.
That lead lasted all but two minutes, as Geneseo fired back with two unanswered goals to tie the game. However, the Lakers went ahead 5-2 after Miranda Czechowski (So., West Seneca, N.Y.) scored and Danielle Citro (Sr., Miller Place, N.Y.) added two goals of her own. Emily Haggerty pulled Geneseo to within one after a pair of markers, but both teams traded goals before the end of the half as Oswego State received scores from Corinne Marsh (Jr., Endwell, N.Y.) and Kjerstad. The Lakers took a slim 7-6 lead into halftime.
Shattuck opened the second half to give Oswego State a two-goal lead, but Geneseo rattled off five unanswered goals to take an 11-7 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Kjerstad started the Laker rally when convert a free-position shot, a statistic that played a large role in the game. Oswego State battled back with goals by Shattuck, Citro, and Lindsey Eggers (Fr., Ridge, N.Y.) to take a 12-11 lead with 55 seconds on the clock.
Geneseo won the ensuing draw control and called timeout to set up its offense. It paid off as Meredith Weber scored her third goal of the game with 18 seconds left to force overtime.
Ninety seconds into overtime, Kjerstad scored Oswego State's fifth free-position goal of the contest to give the Lakers a crucial lead. It was all defense from there on out for Oswego State, as Nikki Greco (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) made four pivotal saves, including two on free-position shots, as the Lakers closed out the game to earn the victory when Shelly Bateman (Sr., Fulton, N.Y.) swatted a Blue Knight pass out of the air that was thrown towards the front of the net.
Greco finished the game with 13 saves and six groundballs, while Geneseo's Julie Bernatzky managed just four stops. The Lakers pick up play again at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 6, versus Cortland.
