The Oswego State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics selected its Outstanding Senior Female and Male Athletes at Wednesday evening's All-Athlete Banquet in the Marano Campus Center Arena. Heather Hebert of the women's basketball team and Brian Sortino of the men's basketball team earned the accolades.
Hebert, the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete, appeared in 70 games as a Laker, starting in 67 of those contests. A two-time All-SUNYAC selection, Hebert scored 899 points in her three-year Oswego career and more than 1,000 in her collegiate career. As a senior, she recorded 381 total points and averaged 15.2 per game, leading the Lakers in both categories and good for third-most in the conference. She is in the top 10 in several single-game, season and career program records lists, including eighth-most for both points per game and rebounds in a career to go along with the sixth-highest field-goal percentage, all despite only playing three years at Oswego. During her sophomore campaign, Hebert was recognized as Third Team All-League by conference coaches and then earned second team honors as a senior after returning from an ACL injury.
Sortino, the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete, is a multiple time All-American, including a first team member as a senior as well as a national player of the year finalist. The national coaches association recognized him as a three-time First Team All-Region performer. Conference coaches did the same, naming Sortino to the All-SUNYAC First Team each of his final three seasons, including Player of the Year honors in his final campaign. A two-time Most Valuable Player of the SUNYAC Championship, he led the Lakers to three-straight conference championship games, winning two titles to advance to the NCAA Championship while also helping Oswego win a regular-season crown as a senior. Sortino netted 1,991 points over his Oswego career, good for the second-most in program history, trailing only Ron Davis' record 2,128 points. In his final season, Sortino ranked in the top 30 nationally for points per game (21.8), total points (611), total minutes (63,300), minutes per game (37.7) and three-point field-goals made (81). The Fairport, N.Y. native also holds several program single-game, individual season and individual career records.
The Outstanding Senior Athlete awards take into account the seniors' entire career at Oswego and is based solely on their individual athletic achievements while wearing a Laker uniform.
