Oswego Splits with New Paltz Including Extra-Innings Win

    OS Softball The Oswego State softball team split a Sunday SUNYAC doubleheader with New Paltz on the road. With the split, Oswego moves to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in conference action while New Paltz goes to 5-9, 2-2.

GAME ONE - New Paltz 4, Oswego 3:

     Oswego fell behind 4-0 in the first three innings but then started to mount a comeback that came up short.

     After a scoreless fourth inning for both squads, Alexandra McKay cut the Hawks' lead in half with a pinch-hit single through the left side that scored Melissa Mulvaney and Jacquie Porreca. All of the Lakers' hits and runs came with two outs in the inning, as Porreca started it off with a single through the left side on a 1-1 count before Mulvaney worked a walk on a full count. Katie Bredin then loaded the bases with a single up the middle but was thrown out at second on McKay's two-run single.

     Bredin would make it a one-run deficit with two outs in the final inning, reaching on an infield single before crossing the plate on an error on a Deanna Apps groundout. The comeback ended there as a fly out with runners on the corner secured the victory for New Paltz.

     The Oswego bats were active in the contest, as eight Lakers finished with at least one hit. Bredin and Dana Taglioni each led the way with two hits while McKay, Mulvaney, Porreca, Ashley Lyman, Sammie Schroeter and Justine Abramowski contributed a hit apiece.

     Alexis Nasca took the loss on the rubber, allowing four earns runs on 11 hits and striking out three.

GAME TWO – Oswego 7, New Paltz 3:

     The Lakers bounced back in the second game, scoring the contests first two runs before exploding for five in the top of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie in extra innings.

     Noelle White started off the scoring by driving in Sammie Schroeter from third on a groundout making it 3-2 Oswego. Bredin then drove in Jessie Terrano, which represented the eventual game-winner by giving the Lakers a 4-2 edge. Later in the inning, Nasca walked to bring in a run before McKay singled to left to drive in Taglioni and Apps, pushing the lead to 7-2.

     Five Oswego batters finished with two hits in the eight innings, including Bredin, Taglioni, Nasca, McKay and Lyman. McKay led the way with three RBI while Nasca finished with two. Bredin and White also had one RBI each.

     Nasca and Alexandria Connelly split the eight innings, going four apiece with Connelly taking the win. Both combined to allow just four hits on the day, with Nasca giving up two runs and Connelly just one.

     The Lakers will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday when they welcome Wells College to campus for the home-opener.
