The Oswego State women's basketball team opened the season with a 76-60 win over Clarkson University at home in the Max Ziel Tournament.
After opening the game on a 6-0 run, Oswego battled back-and-forth with the Golden Knights for nearly 10 minutes. At 11:21, Clarkson's Colleen Daley scored a layup to give her team a three-point advantage at 20-17. The Lakers immediately flipped the script, outscoring the Golden Knights 26-6 over the last 11 minutes of the opening stanza.
During that span, Oswego shot 9-for-18 from the field, including 4-for-6 from 3-point land and 4-for-5 from the charity stipe. Lexi Gillard led the way over the final minutes of the second half, scoring eight of the Lakers points in the run. Seven different players scored for Oswego during the time.
Oswego extended the streak into the second half, scoring the periods first 10 points to take a 53-26 advantage at the 15:38 mark.
The Lakers played with a good-sized margin the rest of the way, never allowing the lead to fall under double-digits.
On offense, the team was led by the senior duo of Jenn Robbins and Paula Egelston, each finishing with 14 points. Robbins added four assists in the contest as did Lauren Nunziato.
Also scoring in double-digits was classmate Tayler Sorell (12) and sophomore Heather Hebert (10). Hebert was nearly perfect from the field, shooting 5-for-6 in the contest. Sorell and Hebert led the team with six rebounds apiece while Egleston and Robbins each nabbed five boards.
As a team, Oswego shot 55.6 percent (30-for-54) from the field and 50.0 percent from beyond the arc (8-for-16).
