The Oswego State volleyball team fought back from a first set loss to defeat St. John Fisher College 3-2 (14-25, 25-15, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14) on the road Wednesday night. With the victory, Oswego improves to 5-1 on the year while the Cardinals drop to 4-2.
After Fisher forced a decisive fifth set, the Lakers were staring at match point for the Cardinals at 14-13. Oswego answered the challenge, with Megan Russell pumping a kill off a Lauren Edwards assist to knot the contest at 14-14. The Lakers then nabbed the lead on a Fisher error and senior Kelsey Dillon drilled home the game-winner from the right side off a Lindsey Champitto pass.
Russell led Oswego on offense, sending 16 kills on the scoreboard. Dillon and freshman Ariel Murawski followed close behind with 10 kills apiece. Edwards paced the Lakers with 22 assists while Champitto chipped in 15 helpers.
On the defensive side, sophomore Jessica Long had a team-high 17 digs. Edwards aided that effort with 10 while senior Rachael Ruggaber had the second-most with 15. Also helping on defense were Dillon and Alison Sullivan, both assisting on four blocks. Sullivan finished with the team-high in the blocks department, as she registered a solo block as well.
Oswego will head back to the Rochester area for its next set of tilts, taking part in the University of Rochester Invitational, which begins with a 6 p.m. battle with Hamilton College on Friday.
