Men's and Women's Tennis Both Defeat Alfred, 5-4

The Oswego State men's and women's tennis teams each defeated Alfred University on the road on Wednesday night. It was the men's first competition of the year while the women move back to .500 at 3-3 for the 2017-18 campaign.

On the women's side, Oswego Haru Kobayashi and Erin Vargo, who each won their singles matches and then helped pick up points in doubles competition. Kobayashi – the reigning Oswego State Female Athlete of the Week – won a 6-3, 6-2 fourth singles match and partnered with Jill Travis to battle for an 8-6 victory at second doubles. Vargo teamed with Jill Burns for an 8-5 double triumph and set her Alfred counterpart home with a 7-5, 6-2 loss in the final singles slot.

Also picking up a point for the Lakers was Bridget Bender. The freshman competed at third singles and came away with a 6-3, 6-4 advantage.

For the men, Oswego was dominant in singles action, collecting victories at second through fifth singles. It started with Chris Gayvert's 6-2, 6-0 performance in the second slot followed by Justin Scuderi's 6-4, 6-3 third singles showing. At fourth singles, Jimmy Terzian cruised to a 6-0 first set and fought off a comeback effort in the second set to the tune of 6-4. The final Laker singles point came from Brian Emigholz, who picked up a fairly easy 6-2, 6-1 win.

Oswego's lone doubles points came from the duo of Terzian and Dillon McDonald. All three doubles matches were fought tooth-and-nail, but none were as close as the 8-7 victory Terzian and McDonald pulled out that proved to be a pivotal point.

The women will return to the courts at 12 p.m. on Saturday when they host Fredonia in a SUNYAC West matchup. Oswego's men will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1 when it travels to Amherst, N.Y. for a nonconference contest.
