Volleyball Splits to End Morrisville Tournament

Coming off a win to open the season, the Oswego State volleyball team split their matches during the second day of the Morrisville State Tournament.

The Lakers started the evening with a loss to MIT, but recovered to defeat tournament host Morrisville.

MIT 3, Oswego 0 (15-25, 16-25, 21-25):

At the start of the first set, Oswego was able to take advantage of MIT's mistakes, with three of its first five points coming off of attack errors. The Engineers were only up by two, but then started to pull away. MIT scored seven straight points without a Laker point and kept its momentum going for the rest of the set to win 15-25.

The win set the tone for set two, which the Lakers lost 25-16. In the third set though, Oswego went on a five point run early on to take an 8-5 lead. However, the Engineers were eventually able to overtake the Lakers and won the third set 21-25. Senior Isabella Winklestine led the Lakers in game one with four kills (tied with Lauren Fie and Shauna O'Flaherty) and 20 total attempts.

Oswego 3, Morrisville 1 (25-16, 25-21, 18-25, 31-29)

The Lakers came out strong against Morrisville. Alison Sullivan and Melissa Lussier led the way early on, with two kills each to make up the Lakers' first four points. Oswego never trailed the entire set, winning set one with a score of 25-16. In the second set, the Lakers stayed in control for most of the set again, only trailing at the very beginning.

After the Mustangs won set three, both teams fought hard to win set four. With the Lakers up 24-20 and ready for the set point, Morrisville managed four kills in a row to tie the game. The teams went back and forth, but Fie came up big with two kills in a row to finally get the Lakers the 31-29 win over the Mustangs. At the end of the tournament, O'Flaherty was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lakers will be back in action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Canton, N.Y. to face St. Lawrence.
