Women's Basketball Drops Close Contest Against Naz

OS Basketball

The Oswego State women's basketball team fell 79-75 to Nazareth on Sunday afternoon at Max Ziel Gymnasium. With the loss, Oswego moves to 3-6 on the season. The Golden Flyers go to 5-4 on the year.

It was a back-and-forth first half, with seven different lead changes between the two teams. Oswego found some momentum with a little over seven minutes left in the half after Lexi Gillard came off the bench and hit a three to put the team within one. Heather Hebert then knocked down a jumper to give the Lakers a 27-26 lead. Nazareth's Veronica Peck was able to make two lay-ups, including an 'and one', to help the Golden Flyers reclaim the lead and close out the half with a 36-30 lead.

The Lakers battled throughout the rest of the game, coming within one at one moment, but were never able to regain a lead. Oswego made a push in the game's final seconds when Courtney Ameele drove in the lane, earning a layup and the foul. The free throw would have pushed it to a three-point game but Ameele missed and Naz was able to hold the ball for the last second.

Hebert ended the game with 20 points and 15 rebounds, achieving her fourth double-double of the year and second in as many games. Also reaching double digit points for the Lakers was Alisha Jacobs who finished with 13. Rachel Windhausen pitched in as well, scoring nine points and raking in eight boards.

Women's basketball will return to the court when it host Oneonta for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday.
